Kelly Holmes started the Olympic 800m final run in Athens 2004 near the back of the field. At the 400m mark, she was in second-to-last place. Over the final lap, she steadily overtook her competitors and crossed the finish line first with a time of 1:56.38, a personal best at the age of 34.
Holmes became the first British woman to win Olympic gold in the 800m and her victory was later voted among Britain’s greatest Olympic moments.
