Algeria’s Noureddine Morceli entered the Atlanta 1996 Olympic final as the dominant force in the 1500m, holding the world record and three world titles. His main rival, Morocco’s Hicham El Guerrouj, was the rising star everyone expected to challenge him.

The race took a dramatic turn when El Guerrouj tripped with one lap to go, allowing Morceli to surge ahead and claim Olympic gold. Spain’s Fermín Cacho took silver, while Stephen Kipkorir of Kenya earned bronze.
