Here's a weird thing to think about, so I hope your brain is prepared

There's a whole lotta stuff in outer space we can't see, but it's actually there

And no, I'm not talking about planets, or stars, or galaxies far away

I'm talking about the stuff between the objects in space we see every day

Scientists call it dark matter, the idea is a little bit tricky

The first person to kind of observe it was an astronomer named Fritz Zwicky

In 1933 he was studying a cluster of galaxies

He was wondering how they were sticking together with very little gravity

Then it came to him that there might be a type of matter in outer space

That was invisible but able to hold all the visible things in their place

About 40 years later, Vera Rubin, an astronomer from the US

Did more research, got more evidence, so it's really no longer a guess

So now in the world of astronomy they agree dark matter exists

Even though it's something that can't be seen its effects are hard to miss

And just like you really can't see the wind but you can see the things the wind blows

Dark matter affects everything in space but what it looks like no one knows

Scientists think it's like gravity in reverse

But they don't know the source

It produces a negative pressure

Which causes space to expand

The majority of matter in the universe

Is made of this energy we don't understand

And keep our brains from turning to mush

Dark matter is the pull

And dark energy is the push

There's a lot that we still don't know

'Cause we're dealing with things that we cannot see

But maybe one day scientists will solve
