*Lesson Summary:*

In this fun educational music video, students learn about Vega, the fifth brightest star in the night sky. Located 25 light-years away in the constellation Lyra, Vega is a blue-white star that is twice as massive as our Sun. Key concepts include its role in the Summer Triangle, its rapid rotation that causes an equatorial bulge, and its history as a former North Star.

*Key Chapters:*

00:00 Introduction

00:12 Distance of Vega from the Sun; size & brightness comparison to the Sun

00:28 Temperature & visibility of Vega

00:43 Vega's role in the Summer Triangle; explaining the asterism

01:00 Chorus that explains Vega's position & its Bayer designation (Alpha Lyrae)

01:16 Vega's super-fast rotation that makes it bulge at its equator

01:32 Vega's history as a former North Star (and possible future return to that role)

01:48 Repeating chorus to reinforce memorization

*Lyrics:*

About 25 light years from our planet is a star called Vega

When you think about size of outer space Vega's kinda like a next door neighbor

It's the 5th brightest star in the night sky, about 40 times brighter than the sun

"And how many times more solar mass does it have?" About 2.1

It gives off a light that's bluish-white 'cause its temperature's extremely hot

You can still see Vega in the night sky even if your eyeballs are all you've got

In other words no telescope is required because Vega's so bright

If you wanna get technical about it Vega has a Class A spectral type

It's at the top of the Summer Triangle, a star pattern called an asterism

It's three bright stars from three different constellations ("You have to list 'em!")

Okay! Vega from Lyra, Altair from Aquila, Deneb from Cygnus

On a clear summer night in the Northern Hemisphere it's a beautiful thing to witness!

In the constellation Lyra is Vega

The constellation is a harp without a player

In the Northern Hemisphere it shines brightly

The Bayer designation for Vega is Alpha Lyrae

Vega spins really fast, they call it a rapid rotator

The incredible speed causes Vega to actually bulge out at its equator!

It only takes about 12 and a half hours to make a full rotation

If Vega spun only 12 percent faster, the whole thing would break up!

And Vega used to be the North Star about 12,000 years ago

But because the Earth slowly wobbles in space it eventually lost that role

Astronomers say that the time will come when Vega is the North Star again

But it's gonna be 12,000 years from now so we'll check back up on it then

In the constellation Lyra is Vega

The constellation is a harp without a player

In the Northern Hemisphere it shines brightly

The Bayer designation for Vega is Alpha Lyrae
